1. National Health Care--Should we have health care and should it be affordable for everyone? What is good and bad about it?
Health care is a huge issue which faces many people in our country. John McCain says that he would, "promote children's health care, expand health centers, and support health care tax to low-income American." Hillary Clinton will make sure there is health care issurance for all Americans and will expand Medicaid and children's health care. Obama "would create a national health issurance program for those who don't qualify for it or don't recieve employer--provided health care." Does not mandate coverage for all Americans, like Hillary would, but would require it for all children.
2. Education--Should there be public funding? Is No Child Left Behind good or should it be changed?
No Child Left Behind is a controversial issue. It requires public school students to meet certain test standards inorder to recieve federal funding. What about funds for students who want to go to a private school? Hillary Clinton would end no child left behind. She would promote early education and improve the K-12 system. She also would cut minority drop out rate and get good faculty in the school system and increase the Pell Grant. Obama would reform NCLB, ensuring good quality in child education programs. He would get well educated and quilified faculty making science and math a priority. He also would reduce the high school drop out rate. John McCain would like to keep NCLB. In his debate he states, "We need more charter schools. We need to have, clearly, home schooling if people want that. . .We need to reward good teachers and find bad teachers another line of work." I need to know more about the education funding and such because I know nothing and I am going into the education field.
3. War in Iraq--Should troops be pulled out of Iraq or should they be kept there to fight the war on terrorism? What would be the consequences if we pulled out?
The War in Iraq is a very big and emotional issue in the United States today. Hillary Clinton would like to "deauthorize" this war. She wants to pull majority of the troops out by March 2008. Obama would do the same as Hillary. He opposes our troops being in Iraq. McCain voted the opposite. He supported the troops being over sea and supports Bush's plan.

The second paper was harder than I thought it would be. I think it was harder because I didn't really know how to argue the meaning of the word gay. There is a few different definitions and usages. So for me picking an arguing stragedy made it tougher to write. I'd say my logos is pretty good in the paper. I have quotes and such from an article. My ethos is good because this topic can be touchy to some people's beliefs and morals. My pathos could be stronger. I feel that I am struggling a lot with these argument papers. I just don't know how to argue well or pursuade or anything.

I have written many different kinds of papers. I can't really recall a time when I appealed logos, ethos, and pathos to my audience. I've never even heard of these until now. I might have used them unintentionally. Last semester we did lots of different genres and such. So I guess I could have appealed them then with out knowing it. I have always been taught to give examples and quotes, so I don't have a problem with giving examples. I'd say I struggle mostly with ethos because it deals with beliefs and morals and stuff. I am a little nervous coming into this semester having to write a ton a persuasive papers. I'm not a good arguer or persuader and I think it's just because I don't care or I really don't know why. So hopefully I will learn a ton this semester!!

Shawn Vilmaire wrote a blog to "Should English be the official language in the USA?" Shawn's thesis in his blog is a long question. He asks, "Does it matter that it was never voted on and if it does are you willing to change the print in all school books and laws . . . not to mention the cost in training teacher the new language so they can teach the young?" Why change the language or even make English the official language when it pretty much already is? It would be a big mess and costly if they changed the language. "English is taught as a first language to our citizens." "Our laws are written in it. Our citizens speak it. Our schools teach it." Shawn shows pathos by referring back to when he was in the ninth grade by saying, "No, I am not referring to the Urban Legend that says English beat German by one vote, even though I was taught that in Social Studies my 9th grade year." he shows logos by saying, "Our laws make it so by virtue of requiring new citizens to learn it. Our schools make it so by teaching it as a first language. Our history makes it so by having used it for over 200 years." He shows ethos by saying, "I am saying that it is a requirement to become a citizen that you learn English and pass an English test."
I don't feel that Shawn does a good job at showing both sides of the situation. He proves his point but doesn't show the reader the other side. He does a good job at getting the reader to think by asking questions, leaving it open for the reader to make their own opinion. I agree with what the author's point is. Most of the people in the USA speak English and I think it would be dumb to make it official or change it. Why change the language when most of the country speaks it. There are no pictures and anything to catch the eye allowing more readers to over look the article or think it's boring. http://www.helium.com/tm/674576/english-should-official-language

There are many different languages spoken all over the world. In Spain the language spoken in Spanish, in France the language spoken is French, and in Japan the language spoken is Japanese; so why in the U.S. would we change the language, instead of making English the official language? Is it because this is a free country with a lot of different cultures and ethnicities, is it because everything is already written in English so why change it , or is it because it would be a hassle?
If we were to change our language to a new language, it would make things way more complicated than it needs to be. For example, Shawn Vilmaire states, “Are you willing to change the print on all our school books, all our laws, all our official documents, and then train all the teachers to speak the new language and then teach our children it?” So why change the language? Changing the language would only make things way more costly and way more complicated. Look at all the different expenses: changing all books to the new language, such as history books and science books, very costly; setting up programs to teach teachers and students the new language, a big hassle; and rewriting our laws, official documents, and The Declaration of Independence, would all be an unnecessary amount of money. All of these are unnecessary expenses which America, as a country can not afford at this time. Spanish is already growing and being considered as a second language in America. Children are being taught it at a young age. When I was in elementary school, I remember the high schoolers coming into my second grade class and teaching us Spanish. Then in high school and in college, taking a language class was required whether it be French, German, or Spanish.
Why not make English the official language? English is everywhere: “Our laws and documents are written in it, the majority of the population speaks it, and our schools teach it and the school books are written in it” (Vilmaire). English is what the U.S. has always spoken, so why change it? To become a citizen you must learn English and pass an English test—a law to become a citizen—why change the language if it’s a law for a new citizen to know English? English is not the official language; but you can pretty much say that it is. Our laws and documents are written in English, it’s a requirement for a new citizen to know it, our schools teach it, we speak it, our books are written in it, “our history makes it so by having used it for over 200 years”(Vilmaire). English is the language of America.
Freedom, Justice, Equality, and our Rights—things that make this country free and opportunistic. These are the few of many qualities that get people from all over the world to come to America. It’s a land for new opportunity. Because of this, America is considered a melting pot, so therefore changing the language or even making English the official language wouldn’t make this country “free”.
Making a new language in the U.S. official, would only cause bigger problems that this country does not need. We don’t need unnecessary costs. This country can’t afford it. English is already considered the official language. Everything is written in English, most of the people speak English, and it has been spoken for hundreds of years, so why would we want to change everything now?

Brute Essay
A brute is someone who acts unintentionally beastly and animal like with crude behavior. In the short story, “Brute” written by Richard Selzer, he describes a patient and a doctor and shares their story allowing readers to make their own argument on who is more of a brute. In the story “Brute”, I think both the patient and the doctor can be considered a brute.
The patient is considered a brute in a couple ways. The first example of his brute-like behavior is that he needed to be “escorted by four policeman into the Emergency Room”. As the patient was being escorted he could shake off one of the police officers. Four officers is a lot to hold down one man. The second example is that the patient came to the hospital highly intoxicated with a deep wound on his head which needed to be stitched. Even with this awful wound he continued to fight. I think the patient is more of a brute than the doctor. His over all person his a brute and he acts unintentionally.
The doctor is also considered a brute. The first example is that he lets his frustration get the better of him. He gets angry with the patient for not holding still and swears at him. Another example is when he wipes blood away from the patients eyes so he can see him grin “the cruelest grin of my life”. He does this before he sews his ears to the stretcher to make him hold still so he could stitch his wound up. I think the doctor is a different kind of brute compared to the patient. The doctor does not have that all the time brute personality, like the patient does. He has brute-like moments, like sewing the patients ears to the stretcher. I don’t think he intended on doing that, but it’s what he could think of to save the patients life.
I consider both, the patient and the doctor, a brute. I think they are two different kinds of brutes. The patient is an all around brute and the doctor has his moments. A brute is someone who acts without intention, beastly, animal like, and crude.
